How To “Safely” Take MDMA

Please note that I am not promoting MDMA use, but I know that people I know are using this drug at concerts and other events on a fairly regular basis and I want to make sure that if you using it, you at least do it as safely as possible. I will tell you right off the bat, that longterm MDMA usage has well known and demonstrated negative side effects, some of which are listed at the end of this post, so use MDMA at your own risk and try to be safe.

MDMA is a very popular drug and there is a lot of information and misinformation out there about it. Regardless of what you have heard about how fun it is, MDMA has negative side effects and can cause permanent damage to your brain if you are not properly prepared. Side effects such as the “depressed” feeling people feel for a few days after doing MDMA, can be mitigated by proper supplementation. When I refer to MDMA, I am referring to the pure, crystal form of MDMA that is known on the street at “molly.”

A lot of protecting your brain when you do drugs, is in the preparation, which is why I don’t recommend taking any drugs, let alone a party drug, on a whim. If you are going to use a drug, at least be prepared for it properly. I am going to be talking mostly about supplementation here, but the most important things you can do while on MDMA are keeping your body temperature low and staying hydrated. Everything becomes worse if your body temperature is raised, so remember to keep that in mind. I will try not to put too much science in here to bore you, but I will put enough so you can attempt to understand why you are taking what you are taking. This is a long article so I here is a Too Long;Didn’t Read list if you want to skip all of the reasoning.

TL;DR List of Substances

Essential:

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid: 200mg of Racemic ALA before your MDMA dose and every hour of the roll. If you get Na-R-ALA, you can take 100mg before and then every 2 hours.
  • Magnesium: 2,000mg (200mg elemental mg) 6 hours before , 1 hour before, and take some more during.
  • Vitamin C: You can use a Emergen-C packets to get the vitamin C (1,000 mg) and take it 1 hour before and during. Although an orange or orange juice can work just as well.
  • Grape Seed Extract: Take 100mg before and during the roll.
  • Grapefruit Juice: Drink in the morning, an hour before, and some later into the night.

This list is divided this up into essential supplements and suggested supplements. If it were me, I would take all of them. As requested by visitors, I’ve added links to the brands I recommend (I do receive a small commission if you buy something through me, so thanks if you do):

Essential Supplements:

 

Magnesium:

MDMA causes your brain to release a lot of glutamate into the hippocampus. The glutamate binds at these parts of your neurons called NMDA receptor sites and allows calcium to go into the neurons. This is how your brain sends out signals, the extra glutamate released because of the MDMA causes them to stay open too long and they can burn out (neuronal death). Magnesium is what the body uses to clear the channel out and allow the neuron to act normally. So having magnesium in your body will stop the neuron from become so excited it dies (excitotoxicity). So basically you want a good form of magnesium in your body before you do MDMA. There are lots of forms of magnesium so I won’t get into what they all do, but you want the form called magnesium glycinate.

Take 2,000mg ( or 200mg  if elemental mg) 6 hours before , 1 hour before, and take some more during.

Vitamin C:

This is probably the most widely known substance on this list and is a powerful antioxidant. It has also been shown to prevent MDMA induced liver damage (hepatotoxicity). It is also shown to protect your neurons.

You can use a Emergen-C packets to get the vitamin C (1,000 mg) and take it 1 hour before and during. Although an orange or orange juice can work just as well. 

 

Alpha Lipoic Acid:

This is a powerful antioxidant that takes out reactive oxygen and nitrogen.  You want the Na-R-ALA form which has been shown in experiments like this, to “fully prevent the serotonergic deficits and the changes in the glial response induced by MDMA”

You should take 200mg of Racemic ALA before your MDMA dose and every hour of the roll. If you get Na-R-ALA, you can take 100mg before and then every 2 hours.

 

Grape Seed Extract:

This is one of my go to supplements for healing that I learned a lot about when I got my wisdom teeth out. It is high in vitamin E and other related compounds. Vitamin E (which you can supplement as well) has been shown to protect against neuron death .

Take 100mg before and during the roll.

Grapefruit Juice:

This is another commonly known substance, and can be found at any corner store. It is very important because it inhibits a molecule called CYP3A4 from breaking down MDMA into MDA. MDA is much worse for your body than MDMA and so you want to make sure you can stop it from being introduced into your system. It has been shown that grapefruit reduces the CYP3A4 metabolism 90% (meaning it works at shutting it down pretty well). Because it stops the MDMA from being broken down into MDA, it means that you will have more MDMA present in your system for longer (meaning your MDMA dose should be smaller because it will last longer).

Drink in the morning, an hour before, and some later into the night.

Note on MDMA to MDA metabolism: This study shows that the factors for conversion from MDMA to MDA (which is bad) is effected by dose size, re-dosing schedule, body temperature and other factors. So remember a lot of factors go into your roll…

Suggested Supplements:

These supplements that are highly recommended as well, but knowing most people, they are not going to utilize all of these substances, so if you are only going to do a few, do the ones above. I would not skip on these, especially if you want to avoid the post MDMA funk.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR):

This one I take daily and it is synergistic with alpha lipoic acid and protects against oxidative stress (plus does a lot of other awesome stuff). It has been shown to prevent MDMA neurotoxicity (neuron death).

500mg before and during the trip

Green Tea Extract (EGCG):

This is a potent antioxidant and it stimulates brain activity. MDMA causes the release of vasopressin, which makes the body retain liquid (stops you from having to pee). Taking EGCG will counteract the effect of the vasopressin and help you get the MDMA out of your system.

Take 400mg before and during

5-HTP:

This one should probably be on the essential list because 5-HT is the direct precursor to serotonin. It is normally created in your body using an enzyme called TPH (tryptophan hydroxlyase). MDMA can cause the level of TPH to decline for weeks after use and so your body can’t make the 5-HT it needs. This is why we supplement the 5-HTP, but to get it to turn into 5-HT in the brain and not the stomach it has to be taken the EGCG, so make sure you take this one with the above Green Tea Extract.

Take 100mg of 5-HTP (along with 400mg EGCG) 3-7 days following your MDMA use. (DO NOT TAKE BEFORE MDMA!)

Melatonin:

Melatonin is created in the brain from serotonin, and is used to regulate sleep and wake cycles. After a roll, serotonin levels will be low and so the levels of melatonin will be affected. Taking this before bed will help you sleep better. And as a side effect, it also is a strong antioxidant.

Take 5-10mg dose before bed. Normally you would take a much smaller of this dose  .5mg to 1mg.

Recommended Brand: Nature Made

 
Again, I am not recommending you take MDMA, as it is HARMFUL to your brain. If you are going to take it, keep it to a maximum of once every 3 months to be on the safe side. I would definitely not recommend taking it back-to-back days at a festival.
